Biden Signs Executive Order Making Sexual Harassment a Crime in Military

President Joe Biden has signed an executive order that criminalizes sexual harassment under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).

The order takes effect immediately and is an attempt to remedy the military’s perceived inability to combat the problem.

Article 134 of the UCMJ allows for the prosecution of military members for crimes outlined by the President of the United States.

Before the order sexual harassment was not criminalized. Instead, prosecutors would charge troops with dereliction of duty, violating a general order, or maltreatment of a subordinate.

Prosecutors now have charging language to prosecute these crimes and to help the military combat these crimes, which they call it a priority.

The executive order puts troops on notice that this behavior is now being taken seriously.
