House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R, Cali.) is promising he will remove Adam Schiff from the House intelligence committee should Republicans take power in the 2022 midterms.
Schiff (D, Cali.) led a politically charged intelligence committee during the end of the Trump presidency and was the lead impeachment manager for Trump’s first impeachment trial.
According to McCarthy, “Why is he still chair of the committee and why is he even on the committee? In a new Congress, if it’s a new majority, he will not be. You cannot make this committee political.”
Multiple experts have anointed McCarthy the frontrunner to become speaker of the House should the GOP take power in 2023.
Schiff’s camp has responded with a spokesperson shooting back at McCarthy saying, “allowing McCarthy to get anywhere near the Speaker’s gavel would be catastrophic—not just because of his propensity for falsehoods and smears, but because he will exist solely to do Donald Trump’s bidding—even potentially overturning the 2024 results.”
The removal of a representative is not an unknown occurrence, Democrats removed Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R, Ga.) for her embrace of conspiracy theories.
