Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY, reportedly reacted strongly to a vote to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., from the House Foreign Affairs Committee, launching into an angry tirade in response to the news.
The New York Democratic representative told her colleagues that the GOP was “targeting women of color” with its decision to remove Omar, which Republicans said was due to antisemitic and anti-American sentiments in the past.
Ocasio-Cortez also accused the Republican Party of hypocrisy for promoting Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., to high-level committee assignments despite her own history of provocative remarks about the same ethnic group.
After her speech, the congresswoman smashed her notepad against the podium.
Shortly before a party-line 218-211 vote to remove Omar from the committee, Ocasio-Cortez walked to the House floor to express her displeasure with the decision.
She then slammed House Republicans’ claims that the vote was compatible with their past stance on the Minnesota Democrat’s conduct.
Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Ariz., was censured by Congress in 2021 for spreading a meme of anime cartoon characters murdering each other that incorporated AOC’s face.
