One of former President Donald Trump’s biggest early backers, former Congressman Lou Barletta, is now calling on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to run for President.
Barletta, is well known for his unwavering support of conservative causes and his formerly strong friendship with former President Donald Trump.
Between the years of 2011 and 2019, he was the representative for Pennsylvania’s 11th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives.
In addition to that, Barletta served as the mayor of Hazleton in Pennsylvania during the years 2000 to 2010.
The importance that Barletta placed on problems like immigration and national security was a defining characteristic of his political career.
His efforts to crack down on illegal immigration in the city of Hazleton earned him national prominence while he was serving as mayor of that community.
Throughout his career in Congress, Barletta maintained his concentration on topics pertaining to immigration and national security.
He advocated for more stringent immigration policies and was in favor of the construction of a wall along the border with Mexico.
In addition to that, he was a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, in which capacity he worked on problems of terrorism and cybersecurity.
During the campaign for the 2016 presidential election, Barletta and Donald Trump first began developing their tight friendship.
He was one of Trump’s earliest supporters and served as the co-chair of the campaign in Pennsylvania for Trump’s presidential bid.
Throughout the entirety of the campaign, Barletta was an outspoken supporter of Trump.
During the midterm elections in 2018, Barletta put his allegiance to President Trump on full display. He attempted to unseat the incumbent Democrat Bob Casey in Pennsylvania’s seat in the United States Senate, however he ultimately failed in the attempt.
In spite of Trump’s backing and endorsement, Barletta came up on the losing end of the contest by a significant margin.
Barletta’s announcement is a potentially major development in the race and could be a major signal that many of Trump’s origin backers have now soured on him for good.
