Kevin McCarthy, the Republican Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from California, reportedly met with Tsai Ing-wen, the President of Taiwan, on Wednesday in California, defying threats from China that are an attempt to put pressure on and internationally isolate the island.
McCarthy convened a meeting between members of both parties with Tsai at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Los Angeles.
In attendance were dozens of legislators, including the chair and ranking member of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, Representatives Mike Gallagher (R) of Wisconsin and Raja Krishnamoorthi of California (D-IL).
At a joint news conference with Tsai, the Speaker of the House of Representatives expressed his belief that ties between the United States and Taiwan are better than they have ever been.
McCarthy, on the other hand, lambasted authoritarian leaders for inciting avoidable wars via the use of violence and terror at a time when tensions throughout the world had reached their greatest point since the conclusion of the Cold War.
McCarthy has stated that he has no intention of further inflaming relations with China, in spite of attending the provocative visit.
Notwithstanding this, he advocated the continuation of military shipments to Taiwan, the enhancement of economic ties, and the promotion of principles that are shared with the island.
President Tsai of Taiwan extended her gratitude to members of the House for their support of Taiwan’s self-determination.
