Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York reportedly won’t face Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York in the 2024 general election.
Ocasio-Cortez’s spokesperson, Lauren Hitt, stated to Politico on Sunday that the lawmaker is “not planning” to run for the Senate.
In January, Gillibrand, who began office in 2009, confirmed her intention to run for re-election despite rumors that a more left-leaning member of her party may oppose her in the state’s competitive primary.
Since then, no well-known rival has been declared. Ritchie Torres and Jamaal Bowman, both Democrats from New York, also informed Politico that they had no plans to run for office.
Similar questions about challenging Sen. Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, were posed to Ocasio-Cortez in 2021. At first, she did not rule it out, but she ultimately decided against it.
AOC made her political debut in 2018 by defeating a 10-term incumbent in the Democratic primary for the 14th congressional district of New York.
She has now grown to be one of the Democratic Party’s most active and visible members, well-known for her radical left-wing views on matters like wealth inequality, social justice, and climate change.
In the past Cortez has favored the Green New Deal, which many believe would endanger the U.s. economy by making America completely dependent on erratic and unproven renewable energy sources like wind and solar.
She also favors Medicare for All, a government-run healthcare system that many conservatives believe will result in longer wait times, worse quality treatment, and more taxes for all Americans by doing away with private health insurance.
She has also called for the elimination of ICE, which would spell the end of the organization responsible for guarding America’s borders.
In spite of this, Ocasio-Cortez reportedly has $5 million on hand to utilize for future campaigns and is still one of the most well-known members of the House of Representatives.
