A stunning new Washington Post-ABC News poll has now revealed that President Biden is struggling to win the approval of a cynical public, with growing dissatisfaction over his handling of the economy and immigration.
A rising proportion of respondents now reportedly believe the United States is doing too much to aid Ukraine in its war with Russia, and widespread concerns about his age as he seeks a second term.
At this juncture of the election cycle, the Post-ABC poll shows that Biden trails Trump by a shocking 10 percentage points.
Trump is in a solid position nationally in his bid to become the Republican presidential nominee for a third time, despite facing multiple criminal charges.
He is favored by 54% of Republicans and independents leaning Republican, almost unchanged from 51% in May.
Biden and former president Donald Trump appear bound for a 2020 rematch, despite the fact that more than three-quarters of Democrats and Democrats-leaning independents would prefer an alternative nominee.
However it was unclear who Democratic voters would choose to replace him, with only 8 percent naming Vice President Harris, 8 percent naming Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and 20 percent saying they prefer “just someone else.”
In response to the question of whether the former president is being held accountable under the law like everyone else or unjustly victimized by his political opponents, 53% of Americans say he is being held accountable under the law like everyone else and 40% say he is being unfairly victimized.
Three-quarters of Republicans agree with this statement.
Biden’s overall approval rating is 37%, the same as it was in May but lower than it was in February, when it was 42%. In line with other recent polls, 56 percent of Americans disapprove of Vice President Joe Biden.
