During a speech at the Iowa Democratic Party dinner on Saturday, Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) accused California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) of secretly conducting a presidential campaign against President Biden.
While acknowledging that Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) has put out a challenge to Biden, Fetterman also aimed a jab at Newsom, who is regarded by many as a front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination but has chosen to back Biden.
“One is a congressman from Minnesota, the other is the governor of California, but only one has the guts to announce it,” Fetter said during his speech to the crowd.
In addition to Biden, Fetterman informed the audience that two other Democrats are “running for president right now.”
Last month, Phillips announced his unlikely run for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Even if Biden decides not to seek reelection, Newsom has made it clear time and time again that he will not run for president in 2024.
Over the weekend, Democrats were presented with fresh polling that indicated Joe Biden would lose to President Trump in a head-to-head contest.
In addition, according Democratic political strategist David Axelrod, a former top advisor to Obama, has now said Biden should consider not running for reelection given voter concerns about his age and his weakness in polls.
