The Pentagon announced on Friday that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is recovering from a recent visit to Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
Monday evening, Austin was committed to the hospital in Washington, according to Pentagon press secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder.
“He is recovering well and is expecting to resume his full duties today. At all times, the deputy secretary of defense was prepared to act for and exercise the powers of the secretary, if required.” Ryder said.
Initially, the nature of the elective medical procedure remained ambiguous. Austin, aged 70, is a four-star retired Army general with over four decades of military service.
Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks has been assuming responsibilities in her absence, which was originally planned.
