President Joe Biden urged House Republicans to abandon their impeachment investigation into him on Friday, following the indictment this week for lying to federal authorities of an informant who provided the FBI with information about alleged corruption involving the Biden family.
Special Counsel David Weiss indicted Alexander Smirnov on charges of 18 U.S.C. § 1001 (false statement) and 18 U.S.C. § 1519 (creation of a false and fictitious record).
The charges were in connection with allegedly false information that Smirnov provided to his FBI handler regarding the purported business dealings of Joe Biden, his son Hunter Biden, and Ukrainian natural gas company Burisma.
According to the indictment, Smirnov’s FBI supervisor cautioned him approximately twice a decade over the truthfulness of the information he provided to the Bureau, or else he would be held criminally liable.
He was apprehended at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas on Thursday subsequent to his arrival in the United States from a foreign country.
Smirnov divulged information to the handler that he was aware was being utilized in multiple FBI criminal investigations.
According to the indictment, he was granted permission by U.S. authorities to partake in specific unlawful conduct in order to aid law enforcement agencies in their investigations.
According to the indictment, the allegations Smirnov supplied to his supervisor in June 2020 were deemed to be “fabricated.”
