Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) discussed the potential consequences Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) could face if he decides to proceed with a vote on aid to Ukraine.
Bacon highlighted the narrow majority held by the GOP, which is set to decrease to just one seat following the retirement of Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) in mid-April.
“It’s possible, I’m not going to deny it. We have one or two people that are not team players. They’d rather enjoy the limelight, the social media.” Bacon said when asked if Johnson may be ousted.
“And the fact is with the one-seat majority — and we’ll end up with a three- or four-seat majority after some special elections — out of 435 people, it’s a very narrow majority. And one or two people can make this a minority. And I’m of the view you work with the team. I don’t have to get 100 percent.” he continued.
During his address to lawmakers, Johnson expressed his intention to address the issue of aid for Ukraine upon the return of Congress to Washington in mid-April, following the holiday recess.
There are some conservative spending hawks who oppose providing further assistance to the embattled nation, as it enters its third year of conflict with Russia.
In a recent incident, the Louisiana Republican declined to entertain a foreign aid package passed by the Senate. This package, which amounted to $60 billion for Ukraine, was rejected due to concerns over the absence of border security measures. He has recently proposed providing assistance to Ukraine through a loan.
In a recent development, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has taken a significant step by filing a motion to vacate the Speakership.
This procedural move has the potential to initiate a vote that could result in the removal of Johnson. In a remarkable turn of events.
Johnson played a pivotal role in the successful passage of a significant spending package, mere hours before the looming threat of a partial government shutdown.
A number of House Democrats have recently expressed a potential willingness to support Johnson in avoiding any potential removal, contingent upon his handling of the Ukraine aid situation.
