Former President Obama’s sister claimed she was tear-gassed during a rally in Nairobi over controversial financial legislation.
Auma Obama, a Kenyan activist and former president’s half-sister, was tear-gassed before speaking to CNN at a rally in the country on Monday.
“I can’t even see anymore, we’re being tear gassed,” Obama said during an appearance on CNN.
She added that “young people are just trying to demonstrate for their rights.”
Widespread protests have seized Kenya against legislation that would impose additional taxes on its inhabitants.
CNN’s camera footage depicts a chaotic scene, with some demonstrators holding signs and wearing goggles and masks.
At the end of the footage, a CNN reporter and team left the area to avoid tear gas and smoke.
Protesters are marching under the name “7 Days of Rage” to oppose the Finance Bill 2024. The bill was passed later on Tuesday, despite protests from activists.
Later on Tuesday, a part of Kenya’s parliament building caught fire amid widespread protests.
Shortly after the law was enacted, demonstrators rushed past police to enter the parliament building.
