Former CNN Analyst Wins New York Primary

Former CNN senior political analyst and presenter John Avlon won the Democratic primary in New York’s 1st Congressional District on Tuesday.

Avlon, who announced his retirement from CNN in February, defeated Nancy Goroff by more than 70% of the vote.

The former CNN analyst will run against Republican incumbent Rep. Nick LaLota (R-NY) in the 2024 election.

Avlon’s plans to run for Congress were revealed just days after he announced his departure from CNN. Avlon confirmed the news that same month.

Prior to joining CNN, Avlon was the editor-in-chief of the Daily Beast and a speechwriter for former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

In recent years, Avlon has often criticized Giuliani, and last year he labeled his old boss’ remarks on the 2020 race as “unforgivable.”

Avlon has written several works in support of political centrism.
