Approximately 44% of respondents in a new study believe President Biden will withdraw from the 2024 race, despite the president’s insistence otherwise.
According to a new YouGov poll issued on Friday, respondents are generally divided on what they expect the president to do, as calls grow for the incumbent to step down and make way for another candidate to oppose Trump in November.
Just over 15% of respondents believed it was “very likely” that Biden would drop out, while 28% said it was “somewhat likely.”
On the other hand, 24% felt it was “not very likely” for him to withdraw, while 14% said it was “not likely” at all. The study found that around 18% were undecided.
Independent voters were more likely to express uncertainty about the president’s decision. Republicans, on the other hand, were more inclined to say he would stand down.
Voters are similarly divided on what would happen if a new candidate were picked to lead the Democratic ticket.
A separate YouGov study indicated that if Biden stepped down, only 25% believe the next contender would be a better president.
Around 37% believe a new contender will be similar to Biden, 28% are unclear, and 10% believe a replacement for Biden would be worse.
Nonetheless, people were more inclined to believe that a different candidate would have a greater chance of defeating former President Donald Trump, who formally accepted the GOP nomination Thursday at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, in November.
According to a third YouGov study, 33 percent believe the new nominee is more likely to win, while 26 percent believe they have roughly the same chance as Biden versus the former president.
Just under 15% believed a Biden replacement candidate would be less likely to win, while 27% were unsure.
