Vice President Kamala Harris has been endorsed by former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama as the Democratic presidential candidate.
In an early Friday video, the couple contacted Harris to express their endorsement, with Obama initiating the conversation by yelling her name.
“I can’t have this phone call without saying to my girl Kamala: I am proud of you. This is going to be historic.” Michelle Obama can be seen saying on the video.
“We called to say Michelle and I couldn’t be prouder to endorse you and do everything we can to get you through this election and into the Oval Office.” Barack then says.
“Oh my goodness. Michelle, Barack, this means so much to me, I am looking forward to doing this with the two of you, Doug and I both. And getting out there, being on the road.” Harris can be seen saying in response.
Days following President Joe Biden’s resignation, the endorsement is a testament to his confidence in Harris’ ability to lead the Democratic campaign.
Obama’s endorsement has been highly anticipated, despite the fact that Harris has already garnered widespread support from other prominent Democratic figures.
On Thursday, sources close to Obama tried to claim to NBC News that the former president delayed his endorsement due to his desire to avoid overshadowing Biden’s Oval Office address regarding his resignation, which was broadcast on Wednesday.
