Senior Democrat Steyn Hoyer Suffers Stroke

Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), who has served three times as House majority leader, reportedly suffered a “mild” stroke over the weekend and plans to return to work after receiving treatment, according to his office.

Hoyer is currently 85 years old.

Margaret Mulkerrin, Hoyer’s deputy chief of staff and spokesman, issued a statement regarding the health scare on Tuesday.

Some House lawmakers, including Reps. Mike Lawler (R-NY) and Ritchie Torres (D-NY), wished Hoyer speedy recovery.

The leading candidates in Maryland’s U.S. Senate campaign, Democrats Angela Alsobrooks and Republicans Larry Hogan, did the same.

The small stroke occurred when the age and health of longstanding politicians became a focus in the 2024 race.

President Joe Biden, 81, withdrew out of the presidential race last month after a stumbling debate performance prompted Democrats to call on him to quit down due to worries about his mental clarity and electability.

Vice President Kamala Harris has since secured the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, setting up a general election clash with former President Donald Trump.

The 2024 election might dramatically alter the political structure in Washington, D.C. currently, Democrats control the White House and the Senate, while Republicans control the House.
