Trayon White Sr., a Democratic councilmember of Washington, D.C., was reportedly apprehended by federal law enforcement in an affluent neighborhood of the city over the weekend.
The Washington Post reported that nearly a dozen FBI agents were observed at a luxury apartment complex in Navy Yard, where studio units are available for rent at a rate of over $2,000 per month.
The agents were carrying battering devices that are used to break down doors.
On Monday, White was officially charged with bribery for allegedly taking over $150,000 in various payouts in exchange for helping companies with city contracts.
The Democrat who has served two terms as the representative of Ward 8 in Southeast Washington was on the brink of securing a third term.
It is reported that his detention was a surprise to those in his vicinity, including his own lawyer and other members of the city council.
White’s social media post in 2018 that claimed Jewish bankers control the weather worldwide in order to obtain control of cities garnered national attention.
