Jeff German, a longtime correspondent for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, was murdered in September 2022 by a former Democrat Clark County, Nevada, public administrator. Robert Telles, the former administrator, was found guilty of the crime on Wednesday.
The jury returned a guilty verdict in the trial of 47-year-old Robert Telles after three days of deliberation. Telles is now convicted of stabbing German to death after the reporter wrote about corruption within Telles’ office before he lost a primary election in June 2022.
German had dedicated years to investigating the corruption in Las Vegas politics; however, the narrative that ultimately resulted in his assassination was centered on a lesser-known public office, according to prosecutors.
In May 2022, German, who had spent 40 years in journalism, reported that numerous employees who worked with Telles claimed that he established a “hostile work environment.”
Additionally, German’s report asserted that Telles maintained a “inappropriate” rapport with an employee. German’s reporting was partially to credit for Telles’ third-place finish in his 2022 primary election.
Prosecutors claimed during the trial that surveillance footage captured outside German’s residence depicted a man in a gray Nike sneaker, orange jacket, and large sunhat, who waited in the shrubbery before stabbing the reporter upon his return home.
During the trial, Telles testified and asserted that his former colleagues, a real estate company, and the police had contracted an assassin to murder German and falsely implicate him.
