Former President Trump announced on Friday that he will vote against an upcoming ballot measure in Florida. The measure would prevent future state legislation from restricting abortion access and would invalidate the state’s current abortion ban.
Trump, who has maintained that the state’s current legislation prohibiting the procedure after six weeks of pregnancy is excessively restrictive, informed Bryan Llenas of Fox News that he would vote against the proposal, despite his reservations.
“I think six weeks, you need more time than six weeks. I’ve disagreed with that right from the early primaries when I heard about it, I disagreed with it. At the same time, the Democrats are radical because the nine months is just a ridiculous situation.” Trump said
“All of that stuff is unacceptable, so I will be voting no for that reason,” he added.
Abortion is presently prohibited in Florida after six weeks of pregnancy, which is before the majority of women are aware that they are pregnant. The law contains exemptions for incest and rape.
In a pair of interviews earlier this week, Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with the six-week moratorium, stating that it is “too short.”
This suggests that he may support the ballot measure to overturn the Florida law.
However, his campaign promptly clarified on Thursday that he was still undecided in response to the backlash from pro-life activists.
Trump and his allies have consistently blasted Democrats for their more radical stance on the issue and their support for abortion up until birth.
