DOJ Issues Indictment Against Former Trump Campaign Advisor

Additional actions against Russian figures were reportedly announced by the Justice Department on Thursday.

The department filed charges against a former Trump campaign adviser and his wife, as well as several Russian intelligence hackers who targeted Ukrainian assets.

Dimitri Simes, who served as an adviser to former President Trump’s 2016 campaign through his think tank, and his wife, Anastasia Simes, are accused of violating sanctions laws by providing assistance to Russian broadcaster Channel One Russia, which is prohibited from operating in the United States.

Simes was a presenter and producer for the channel, and it is alleged that he received over $1 million in payments, as well as a personal car and driver, a stipend for an apartment in Moscow, Russia, as well as a team of 10 employees from Channel One Russia.

Under the Office of Foreign Assets Control, Channel One Russia has been sanctioned.

Anastasia Simes is also purported to have participated in an additional endeavor to circumvent sanctions against a Russian oligarch by covertly purchasing art and antiquities on his behalf and subsequently transporting them to Russia.

Prosecutors in Baltimore also announced a superseding indictment on Thursday, which included five additional Russian individuals in a case.

The case is being prosecuted for the hacking of Ukrainian government systems prior to Russia’s invasion of the country.

The new indictment includes charges against five individuals who are purportedly employed by Russia’s GRU intelligence service, in contrast to the previous indictment, which only charged one of the men implicated.
