REPORT: Jack Smith to Resign Before Trump Inauguration

Before President-elect Trump is sworn in, Special Counsel Jack Smith reportedly intends to conclude his duties and resign from his position.

Trump has boasted that he intends to terminate Smith “within two seconds” of assuming office and has also made other threatening statements regarding the special counsel, such as suggesting that he should be detained.

The development was initially reported by The New York Times.

In his election interference case against Trump, Smith requested a suspension of deadlines on Friday.

He cited the Justice Department’s memo prohibiting the prosecution of a sitting president and the unprecedented nature of a president entering office while facing charges.

According to The Times, additional members of Smith’s team are also contemplating resignation.

Smith has a variety of options for concluding his work, such as releasing a report that summarizes his investigations.

The attorney general is responsible for determining whether or not to disclose the report that special counsels submit to the public.
