Merchan Calls Off Trump Sentencing in Hush Money Case

In light of the fact that President-elect Trump’s attorneys are now reportedly attempting to have the prosecution dismissed in the wake of his election victory, the sentencing hearing for his criminal case in New York will reportedly now not proceed as scheduled.

A letter sent out on Friday by Judge Juan Merchan, who is in charge of overseeing the proceedings of the trial, announced the adjournment.

The judge put the case on hold in order to receive additional written briefings on Trump’s position that his return to the White House necessitates the court to completely overturn his conviction on 34 counts.

There was opposition to that proposal from the Democratic District Attorney of Manhattan, Alvin Bragg. Instead, Bragg suggested that Merchan might put a hold on the proceedings while Trump is in power.

This would imply that the conviction would continue to be on record, but the punishment would not take place until 2029 at the earliest.

It was ordered by Merchan that Trump submit his formal motion requesting dismissal by the 2nd of December, and Bragg was to respond by the 9th of December. After that, the judge will decide what additional steps should be taken.

In spite of the fact that both parties agreed to postpone the sentencing, Bragg’s request has been accommodated by the new schedule.

A slower schedule was requested by Trump in the hopes that it would bring the fight over his firing closer to the day of his inauguration.

Trump’s campaign spokeswoman and the incoming communications director for the White House, Steven Cheung, referred to the verdict as a “decisive win” for the past and upcoming president.

“President Trump won a landslide victory as the American People have issued a mandate to return him to office and dispose of all remnants of the Witch Hunt cases. All of the sham lawfare attacks against President Trump are now destroyed and we are focused on Making America Great Again.” he remarked.
