According to a recent report, Vice President Kamala Harris has now already announced that she is not ruling out the possibility of pursuing another political career, despite her humiliating recent loss to President-elect Donald Trump in the 2024 White House race.
Harris has privately advised advisers and others to keep her options open, according to a report by POLITICO on Monday.
This includes the possibility of a 2026 campaign for governor in her native state of California or even another presidential run in 2028.
“I am staying in the fight,” Harris reportedly told supporters in recent phone calls.
In the 2024 presidential election, Harris, a former U.S. senator and California attorney general, succeeded President Joe Biden as the Democratic Party’s nominee.
Biden withdrew from the campaign earlier this year after a failed debate performance against Trump.
Trump ultimately emerged victorious in all of the battleground states and made significant gains among working-class voters, minority groups, and young people, ultimately defeating Harris.
Harris and her spouse, Doug Emhoff, embarked on a vacation to Hawaii last week following her election loss.
Harris is anticipated to return to Washington, D.C., where she is expected to engage in discussions with family members regarding potential future courses of action during the winter holiday season, according to POLITICO, which cited insider sources.
In the event that Harris were to run for governor of California in 2026, she would be competing to replace Gavin Newsom, a fellow Democrat who is term-limited and is also considered a prospective candidate for the presidency in the 2028 election.
In California, a number of Democrats have already initiated campaigns for governor, such as former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis. However, polling has suggested that Harris would have an advantage if she were to run.
