David Plouffe, a top adviser to the unsuccessful White House campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris, reportedly stated that the campaign’s internal data did not match public polls that showed Harris ahead of Donald Trump, who is now the President-elect.
The statement was made during a post-mortem chat with several key Harris campaign staffers about “what went wrong” for them in the 2024 presidential election.
The debate took place on the most recent episode of the podcast titled “Pod Save America.”
“I think it surprised people, because there was these public polls that came out in late September, early October, showing us with leads that we never saw … it was just basically a race that in the battlegrounds was 46-47, 47-48.” Plouffe remarked.
During the month of July, Harris entered the race, shortly after Vice President Joe Biden resigned from his position as a result of pressure from allies who were concerned about his mental capability, age, and electability in the wake of a failing performance in the debate against Donald Trump.
As can be seen in the national poll average data provided by RealClearPolitics, Harris enjoyed a two-point competitive advantage from the end of September until the beginning of October.
While this was going on, Harris was able to build up a slight advantage in the betting odds, but Trump was able to catch up and take it away from him.
“I think the political atmosphere, the desire for change, all those fundamentals that you’ve spent a lot of time talking about really presented huge challenges for us. So … we got there, but we didn’t get the breaks we needed.” Plouffe concluded.
