MSNBC is now reportedly facing a startling ratings drop as a result of the 2024 election.
The audience of the network has decreased by over half, and Fox News has become the only cable news station to show growth.
According to data provided by Nielsen, the total viewership of MSNBC has decreased by 47 percent since the election, and the network’s important 25-54 demographic has dropped to just 63,000 during primetime.
This is a significant decrease in comparison to the numbers it had before the election.
The losses are especially severe when contrasted to those of the competing network Fox News, which strengthened its position as the cable news network that received the most viewers both during and after the election.
Although MSNBC was able to attract 644,000 viewers during primetime, Fox News was able to reach 3.2 million people, representing an increase of 86 percent year-over-year in total viewers.
Fox reported a 147 percent increase in the highly desirable demographic of 25-54 year olds, with an average of 476,000 viewers.
Over the course of the day, MSNBC continued to struggle with its ratings, attracting 497,000 viewers and only 49,000 viewers in the 25-54 demographic.
This was due to the fact that shows such as Morning Joe had some of their lowest numbers in years. Co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski met with President-elect Donald Trump, which resulted in a 37 percent decrease in viewership for the network’s flagship morning program.
In addition to the difficulties that MSNBC is facing, a number of its most popular shows, including as The ReidOut and 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle, have reached all-time lows in the 25-54 demographic, which is among the most important.
The network came in a distant second to Fox News in every respect and had a difficult time retaining viewers, particularly amid key post-election events.
In the meantime, Fox News had unprecedented expansion, capturing 62 percent of the total-day viewership for cable news in the month of November (total-day ratings).
CNN also had significant decreases, namely a loss of 33 percent of its entire audience; but, the enormous losses that MSNBC experienced stand out as being the most severe.
With only 14 telecasts that exceeded two million viewers in November, MSNBC is experiencing continuous and long-term challenges in the increasingly competitive cable news industry.
This is in contrast to Fox News, which had 248 telecasts that exceeded this particular threshold.
