Tuesday was the first time that President Joe Biden reportedly addressed the issue of an increase in the number of drone sightings along the East Coast.
However, he only provided a vague assurance that “apparently” there was “nothing nefarious” going on.
As a result of the rush of stories regarding unmanned aircraft, there have been requests for transparency from both political parties, and numerous speculations have been sparked online.
There was not much information provided by the president, but it seemed as though he was suggesting that the sheer number of sightings was merely part of a passing fad.
“Nothing nefarious apparently. But they’re checking it all out. I think it’s just one – there’s a lot of drones authorized that’s up there. I think one started and they all got, everybody wanted to get in their deal.” Biden said.
The Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Department of Defense, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued a joint statement on Monday, claiming that the sightings should not be a cause for worry and that they do not present any urgent national security risk.
Over the past few weeks, authorities have received over 5,000 tips, and the agencies have reported that there are more than a million drones that have been officially registered with the FAA.
In addition to commercial and hobbyist drones, many of the objects that were reported allegedly turned out to be other types of aircraft, including police aircraft, conventional airplanes, helicopters, and even astronomical phenomena.
People from all walks of life have been putting pressure on the government to provide more information.
The call for clarity has been made by a variety of critics and concerned politicians, including members of Congress, President-elect Donald Trump, and Governor Kathy Hochul of New York.
House Intelligence Committee members were given a confidential briefing on the topic by intelligence officials on Tuesday, which took place behind closed doors.
