Greenland’s prime minister reportedly declared on Monday that the autonomous island is not for sale, following President-elect Trump’s assertion that the United States must possess Greenland.
“Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale,” Prime Minister Múte Egede announced in a new statement.
“We must not lose our long struggle for freedom,” they added.
The statement was released subsequent to Trump’s announcement on Sunday that Ken Howery would serve as his ambassador to Denmark and that he was considering the possibility of acquiring Greenland.
Greenland is an autonomous nation that is a member of the Kingdom of Denmark.
In the past, Trump has addressed the issue. In late 2019, Trump expressed his interest in purchasing Greenland on a “strategic” basis, which elicited a frustrated response from Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump noted in a recent Truth Social post.
The president-elect suggested to advisers during his first term that the United States could trade Puerto Rico for Greenland, as per a book by Peter Baker of The New York Times and Susan Glasser of The New Yorker.
Trump also caused a stir this weekend by proposing that the United States regain control of the Panama Canal from Panama, citing his dissatisfaction with the fees associated with canal usage.
