The Club for Growth announced on Friday that it will endorse a new school voucher proposal that has the support of Tennessee Governor Bill Lee.
The organization announced that it would implement a significant television and digital advocacy campaign in support of Lee’s most recent school choice proposal.
This proposal includes 20,000 scholarships that can be applied to private school tuition. The Club for Growth is an advocacy organization that advocates for limited government and promotes free enterprise.
It is anticipated that the campaign will concentrate on Republican legislators who may be uncertain about whether or not to endorse the legislation.
The Club for Growth Action and its affiliated School Freedom Fund super PAC have supported primary challenges to 14 Republican legislators in Texas who opposed school choice legislation, resulting in the defeat of 10 of the targeted lawmakers across the country.
The organization also opposed Republican lawmakers in Tennessee who did not endorse Lee’s campaign for comparable legislation last year.
The Education Freedom Scholarship Act, which Lee is proposing this year, is a follow-up to identical legislation that was unsuccessful last year due to a lack of agreement among Republicans in the state House and Senate regarding the proposal’s language.
In November, the Tennessee Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson (R-TN) and House Majority Leader Rep. William Lamberth (R-Portland) introduced identical legislation in the Assembly in accordance with Lee’s scholarship proposal.
The proposal would establish 20,000 scholarships, each of which would be valued at approximately $7,295. These scholarships would be available for parents to apply for and utilize for expenses such as textbooks and tuition at private institutions.
Half of the scholarships would be allocated to pupils residing in households with annual incomes that are less than 300% of the minimum required to qualify for free or reduced lunch. The subsequent 10,000 would be accessible to all.
If 75% of the available scholarships are utilized in the previous year, an additional 5,000 scholarships will be awarded in the subsequent year.
Starting this year, scholarships are prioritized based on the income levels of current recipients in the event that there is a greater demand than supply.
