The formal announcement of the Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients by President Joe Biden is scheduled for 5 PM on Thursday. One name on the list is certain to garner attention: Liz Cheney.
The 20 names in a statement released early Thursday morning include the former Republican member of Congress, who has been a vocal critic of President-elect Donald Trump.
The Presidential Citizens Medal is granted to United States citizens who have demonstrated exceptional service to their country or their fellow citizens.
President Biden is of the opinion that these Americans are united by their dedication to serving others and their shared sense of decency and that their dedication and sacrifice have improved the country. This in spite of a plethora of evidence to the contrary.
“Throughout two decades in public service, including as a Congresswoman for Wyoming and Vice Chair of the Committee on the January 6 attack, Liz Cheney has raised her voice—and reached across the aisle—to defend our Nation and the ideals we stand for: Freedom. Dignity. And decency. Her integrity and intrepidness remind us all what is possible if we work together.” a statement from the White House read.
Cheney, a dedicated Republican, served as the co-chair of the House Select Committee investigation on January 6th.
She collaborated closely with Bennie Thompson, a House Democrat who served as a co-chair on the same investigation that culminated in a damning report on the lack of action taken by then-President Trump. This as well as a plethora of other disgraceful and underhanded moves served to earn her the ire of the bulk of conservatives.
