Mark Thompson, the chief executive officer of CNN, is reportedly said to have proposed relocating anchor Jim Acosta’s morning show to midnight as part of a planned shakeup at the network.
In his Status newsletter, which was published on Thursday, Oliver Darcy, a former senior media reporter for CNN, stated that Acosta had gotten an odd phone call from CNN chief Mark Thompson the previous evening.
“Thompson, I’m told, delivered the veteran journalist a sudden and strange proposal: Move your show to midnight and anchor it until 2am ET.” Darcy noted, going on to claim that Acosta was caught “off guard” by the proposal.
Taking into consideration the fact that Acosta had some of the highest ratings at CNN, Darcy questioned the justification for the change.
The move may be part of an effort to appeal to President-elect Donald Trump, according to a source who did not wish to be identified according to Darcy.
“They want to get rid of Acosta to throw a bone to Trump. Midnight is not a serious offer when his ratings are among the best on the network.” the source claimed.
As a result of Trump’s victory in the presidential election of 2024, Darcy reported on Wednesday that Thompson was going to reorganize the lineup of CNN correspondents.
There have been rumors that CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer will be transferred from his current job hosting a show at six o’clock in the evening to a position hosting a show in the morning.
