A U.S. Border Patrol agent was reportedly fatally shot in northern Vermont on Monday afternoon, according to a statement from the FBI.
The shooting occurred on Interstate 91 in Coventry, approximately 20 miles south of the U.S.-Canada border.
The FBI is examining the event as a purported attack on a federal officer related to a deadly shooting, as stated by FBI Albany.
The statement revealed that, alongside one agent, one individual was deceased and a second individual was injured and is in jail.
The FBI stated that there is no current threat to the public; however, the investigation remains “active,” and officials will inform the public of any details as they emerge.
The FBI announced its collaboration with Border Patrol personnel and Vermont State Police to investigate the matter.
Benjamine Huffman, the acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security in Washington, verified the agent’s demise in a statement.
The Vermont Congressional delegation — Sen. Bernie Sanders (I), Sen. Peter Welch (D), and at-large Rep. Becca Balint (D) — released a statement expressing sympathy to the agent’s family and the Border Patrol.
They also expressed gratitude to the first responders and emergency medical service personnel who attended to the situation.
“Border Patrol agents do important work protecting our borders. They deserve our full support in terms of staffing, pay and working conditions. We look forward to working with the agency to make sure that they have all the resources they need to do the enormously important work that is their responsibility.” they said in a new statement.
“Together, we must do everything possible to prevent future tragedies like what happened today,” the statement added.
