Andrea Mitchell to Depart MSNBC After 17 Years

After 17 years as the host of “Andrea Mitchell Reports” on the Comcast-owned cable news network, Andrea Mitchell will reportedly leave her position as a full-time anchor on MSNBC on Friday.

Last October, Mitchell declared that she would continue to work as an NBC News correspondent but will leave her daily MSNBC show following the inauguration of the president.

The seasoned journalist will continue to serve as the chief Washington and global affairs correspondent for NBC News.

“After 16 years of being in the anchor chair every day, I want time to do more of what I love the most: connecting, listening, and reporting in the field,” Mitchell told viewers back in October.

“Whoever is elected next week will face the monumental task of handling two foreign wars and the political divisions here at home.” she added.

With Mitchell’s departure, an era at MSNBC comes to an end. “Andrea Mitchell Reports” was the network’s longest-running program during the day, having debuted in 2008.

The program’s replacement has not yet been announced by the network.

Mitchell has worked for NBC News for more than 50 years, covering important world events and every US presidential race since 1980.

Her departure coincides with a period of change at MSNBC, the sister channel of the Peacock Network.

After almost 20 years, Chuck Todd, the veteran moderator of “Meet the Press,” departed NBC News last week.

Friday was his last day.

Rashida Jones, the network’s chief executive, resigned on the eve of Trump’s inauguration, concluding her four-year term as president. Jones was another well-known figure at MSNBC.

The first black woman to be in charge of a major television network is Jones.

Jones was reporting to new corporate leadership after Comcast announced in November that it was splitting MSNBC and CNBC from NBC News into its own business, which would be run by executive Mark Lazarus.

The industry’s financial instability, which has been exacerbated by consumers cutting the cord and switching from linear television to streaming and digital, has caused legacy media companies like MSNBC and CNN to tighten their belts.

Joy Reid and Stephanie Ruhle, two of MSNBC’s biggest stars, were allegedly told they had to accept a pay decrease in order to keep their anchor positions.

Although MSNBC disputed these estimates, the left-leaning news station recently lowered popular anchor Rachel Maddow’s $30 million yearly compensation by $5 million.
