Following President Trump’s intensification of his crackdown, the number of illegal border crossings this month reportedly dropped to levels that have not been seen in decades, according to newly published federal data.
There are just 359 illegal migrants being processed per day over the southern border, according to preliminary data from Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
This represents a fall of thirty percent compared to the same time period in the previous year.
As of February 11, Customs and Border Protection had logged 3,953 encounters with illegal migrants, according to papers that were recently provided with the Post from within the agency.
In the event that this pace continues, the overall number of crossings for the month could end up being close to or below 10,000.
This would be a figure that is akin to April 2017, when approximately 11,000 persons were brought into custody. In the past, that particular milestone had been notable for being one of the monthly totals that was the lowest in recent memory.
A similar sentiment was expressed by the sheriff of Terrell County, Texas, Thaddeus Cleveland, who referred to it as a “relief” and emphasized the remarkable contrast with the high crossings that were previously observed during the cooler months.
During this period of increased enforcement, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) increased its operations, which resulted in the arrest of 11,000 illegal immigrants in just 18 days.
President Trump is praised with providing stronger leadership, according to Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks.
Changes in policy have been implemented by federal agencies in conjunction with cooperation from Mexico.
Mexico dispatched 10,000 troops to its northern border in response to a warning made by the White House to impose a substantial tariff in the event that greater deterrence measures were not implemented.
In addition, the government has put an end to the practice of “catch and release,” brought back flights to Venezuela for the purpose of deportation, and initiated the process of transporting specific criminals to Guantanamo Bay.
These actions are a significant divergence from prior efforts, and some officials have attributed the significant decrease in the number of people who attempted to enter the southern border without authorization to the implementation of these additional measures.
