As the brutal conflict approaches its third anniversary, President Donald Trump reportedly stated on Tuesday that Ukraine should have “made a deal” to prevent war against Russia.
The remarks were made by Trump during a news conference at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky complained about being left out of discussions between the US and Russia.
On Tuesday, Russian and American officials met in Saudi Arabia under the leadership of Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
When asked about Ukraine’s grievances following the US meeting with Russia, Trump responded that Ukraine ought to have struck a deal with Russia “years ago” to stop the violence.
“I hear they’re upset about not having a seat. Well, they’ve had a seat for three years. And a long time before that. This could have been settled very easily. A half-baked negotiator could have settled this years ago.” Trump said.
“You should’ve never started it. You could’ve made a deal. I could’ve made a deal for Ukraine that would have given them almost all of the land, everything, almost all of the land, and no people would have been killed, and no city would have been demolished, and not one dome would have been knocked down. But they chose not to do it that way.” he added.
Since the war began on February 24, 2022, the conflict between Ukraine and Russia has resulted in more than a million deaths or injuries on both sides.
On Sunday, Zelensky declared that he would not even entertain the possibility of a negotiated agreement between Russia and the United States.
Throughout the conflict, liberal european nations—have supported Ukraine’s defense.
Since the start of the conflict, the United States has provided Ukraine with hundreds of billions in military aid, including fighter jets, missiles, ammunition, and weapons.
On Wednesday Trump went on to attack Zelensky again, referring to him as a ‘Dictator’ in a post on his Truth Social account.
“A Dictator without Elections, Zelenskyy better move fast or he is not going to have a Country left. In the meantime, we are successfully negotiating an end to the War with Russia, something all admit only ‘TRUMP,’ and the Trump Administration, can do.” Trump wrote.
