As President Donald Trump has reportedly now made preparations to dissolve the leadership of the United States Postal Service and incorporate the independent mail agency into his administration, the possibility exists that the mail provider, which has been in operation for 250 years, as well as billions of dollars’ worth of e-commerce transactions, could be thrown into chaos by the institution of badly needed reforms.
According to six individuals who are familiar with the plans and spoke on the condition of anonymity out of fear of retaliation, it is anticipated that President Trump will issue an executive order as soon as this week in order to dismiss the members of the governing board of the Postal Service and place the agency under the control of the Commerce Department and Secretary Howard Lutnick.
Jacob Bogage of the Washington Post reported that the United States Postal Service board of governors, which is comprised of eight individuals and is bipartisan, plans to challenge Trump in court.
As evidence, Bogage referenced the opinions of subject matter experts who informed him that the rumored plot by Trump to take control of the postal service would be in violation of federal law.
For years, Trump has been critical of the United States Postal Service (USPS), and he has expressed interest in privatizing the agency in the past.
In the past, Tegna has mentioned that in order to make any significant changes to the agency, it would be necessary for Congress to pass an act.
