REPORT: Buttigieg Eyeing 2028 Presidential Run

Former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has reportedly decided not to pursue a Senate seat in 2026, focusing instead on a potential presidential run in 2028.

According to a report from Politico, Buttigieg met with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to discuss his options but ultimately ruled out a bid for the Senate.

Allies of Buttigieg have framed this decision as a strategic move to position him strongly for the presidency.

David Axelrod, a prominent Democratic strategist, remarked that Buttigieg would have been a formidable candidate for the Senate.

However, winning a Senate seat could hinder his chances for a presidential bid in 2028. By stepping back from the Senate race, Buttigieg keeps his options open for the future.

Buttigieg previously ran for president in 2020, gaining attention for his performance in the Iowa Caucus, where he secured the most delegates despite finishing second in votes.

He also tied with Senator Bernie Sanders in New Hampshire but ultimately withdrew after a fourth-place finish in South Carolina.

Now, with aspirations for the 2028 presidential campaign, Buttigieg is polling just behind former Vice President Kamala Harris, who is contemplating a gubernatorial run in California.

Additionally, he has maintained a strong fundraising network, raising over $15 million for the Harris-Walz campaign in the previous year.

While Buttigieg’s involvement in the Biden administration may pose challenges, the post-2024 political landscape offers opportunities for new leadership within the Democratic Party.

As the party seeks fresh approaches to engage voters, Buttigieg’s focus on innovative outreach remains central to his political strategy.
