The White House has now reportedly withdrawn the nomination of Dave Weldon for the position of director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
This decision was confirmed by Fox News, which reported that Weldon’s confirmation hearing was scheduled for Thursday but has since been canceled by the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee.
Sources indicate that it became evident there were not enough votes in the Senate to secure Weldon’s confirmation, leading to the decision to pull his nomination.
Weldon reportedly learned about the withdrawal only upon arriving at the Capitol for the hearing, although sources suggest he was informed the night before.
Weldon, a former Florida congressman and medical doctor, has previously faced scrutiny for his skeptical views on vaccines.
In a 2007 statement, he raised concerns about possible links between vaccines and developmental disorders, such as autism.
He also advocated for legislation to ban mercury in vaccines during his congressional tenure.
President Trump just withdrew Dr. Dave Weldon’s nomination to lead CDC.

The controversy surrounding Weldon’s nomination comes amid heightened discussion about vaccine safety and public health, particularly following the recent confirmation hearings of other health officials, like HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who also faced questions about vaccine-related claims during his testimony.
As the CDC continues to play a critical role in managing public health issues, the withdrawal of Weldon’s nomination reflects ongoing debates within the Senate regarding leadership appointments in health agencies.
The HELP Committee will still proceed with votes on other nominations, including Dr. Jay Bhattacharya for NIH director and Dr. Marty Makary for FDA Commissioner.
