Democrat Congressman Raul Grijalva Dies

Democratic Congressman Raul Grijalva, who represented Arizona’s 7th Congressional District, passed away at the age of 77 after battling cancer.

His office announced that he died due to complications related to his cancer treatments. Grijalva was known for his kind demeanor and deep care for his staff.

Having served in Congress for over two decades, Grijalva was an advocate for various causes, including the establishment of public parks, childcare centers, healthcare clinics, and affordable housing.

He was particularly passionate about environmental issues, which led him to serve on the Natural Resources Committee, where he fought for climate and economic justice.

In a statement, his office expressed heartbreak over his passing but also a commitment to continue his legacy of service. They emphasized the importance of providing constituent support while a special election is planned to fill his seat.

Grijalva’s colleagues in Congress expressed their condolences and admiration. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez described his death as a “genuinely devastating loss,” honoring him as a champion for working people and a generous mentor.

Senator Ed Markey remarked on Grijalva’s fearless advocacy for climate and health justice, recalling their decade of collaboration on the Natural Resources Committee.

Senator John Curtis, a Republican from Utah, also shared his sadness, acknowledging Grijalva’s dedication to public service and his love for national parks.

He noted their differing political perspectives but admired Grijalva’s commitment to the issues they both cared about.

Grijalva’s passing leaves a significant void in the Democratic Party and among those who valued his dedication to public service and the environment. His contributions to Congress and his community will be remembered by many.
