Jon Stewart was reportedly visibly shocked during a recent episode of his podcast, “The Weekly Show,” as he listened to New York Times columnist Ezra Klein explain the extensive red tape surrounding former President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better Act.
Klein discussed the complexities and bureaucratic hurdles of the $2 trillion legislation, which was intended to fund various social and climate initiatives, including a widespread installation of electric vehicle chargers.
Reflecting on what he described as a simpler time, Klein highlighted the 14-step process jurisdictions must follow to receive funding from the program.
He noted that by the end of 2024, only three out of 56 jurisdictions succeeded in completing the required steps necessary to access funds.
Stewart’s frustration grew as Klein detailed the lengthy requirements involved, leading him to exclaim, “Oh my f**king God!” when Klein reached step 12, which mandates states to implement a “competitive sub-granting process.”
The process is convoluted, requiring states to submit multiple proposals, five-year action plans, and allow for internal reviews before even receiving approvals.
As the discussion progressed, Stewart’s demeanor shifted from laughter to disbelief, ultimately leading him to put his head in his hands and walk away from the podcast.
He was taken aback by the bureaucratic inefficiency that, in his view, undermined the original intentions of the legislation.
Klein emphasized the irony that this complex framework was crafted by the very Democratic administration that aimed to promote effective governance.
Stewart concluded that the situation was far worse than he had imagined, lamenting how the administration effectively “amputated their own legs” in implementing the bill.
