In a recent warning, former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer reportedly highlighted concerns about Republican voter turnout when Donald Trump is not on the ballot, describing it as a “huge problem” for the party.
During an appearance on 2Way, Spicer pointed to a special election in Wisconsin where liberal candidate Susan Crawford defeated conservative Brad Schimel by around 10 percentage points.
This result emerged just months after Trump won Wisconsin by a narrow margin of over 29,000 votes in the 2024 presidential election, raising alarms about the party’s future.
Spicer analyzed the implications of declining GOP turnout, noting that Republican numbers decreased from 1.6 million votes with Trump at the ticket to only 1.05 million without him.
He questioned whether the decreased motivation stemmed from voter dissatisfaction with Trump, local issues, or an overall lack of enthusiasm for the Republican candidates.
Understanding the reasons behind this voter engagement gap is crucial, he argued, particularly as the midterms approach.
In contrast, Florida Republicans showed stronger performance in recent special elections. Candidates like State Senator Randy Fine and former Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis secured significant wins over their Democratic opponents, demonstrating the potential for motivation among GOP voters in different contexts.
Spicer emphasized that both major parties have experienced attrition since 2024, but he indicated that Democrats have been more effective in mobilizing their base.
