Democratic Congressman Donald Norcross from New Jersey has reportedly now been hospitalized in North Carolina following an “emergency medical event” related to his gallbladder, his office reported on April 7, 2025.
Norcross, who has served in the House for over a decade, was traveling when he experienced the medical issue. He was admitted to UNC Rex Hospital on Sunday, where he is currently in stable condition and receiving excellent medical care.
The Congressman expressed his gratitude to the hospital staff for their support during his treatment and is expected to be transferred to Cooper University Health Care to continue his recovery once he is medically cleared to fly.
As Norcross, 66, recovers, it remains uncertain when he will return to Washington, D.C., especially with a critical budget reconciliation vote anticipated on Wednesday.
This vote is particularly significant, as attendance among House Democrats is crucial. Some Republicans have indicated opposition to the Senate-passed budget resolution that aligns with President Donald Trump’s domestic agenda.
Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries emphasized the importance of full Democratic attendance, citing the potential for a closely contested vote.
As of now, the House consists of 220 Republicans and 213 Democrats, following recent special elections in Florida.
Given the current dynamics, GOP leaders can only afford to lose a few votes if all Democrats choose to oppose the budget measure.
Additionally, the House has yet to replace two members who passed away earlier this year, further impacting Democratic attendance in upcoming votes.
Other proposed legislation this week includes measures targeting nationwide injunctions and requirements for proof of citizenship in federal elections.
