An impending bill in Congress would impose a monthly release deadline of border encounter statistics on the Department of Homeland Security and, failure to meet that deadline, reduce the remuneration of the agency’s secretary according to a new report from The Daily Wire.
Although border encounters have reached unprecedented levels, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), under the recently impeached Alejandro Mayorkas, has consistently neglected to disclose encounter statistics in a timely fashion.
Over the course of the last half-year, encounter figures have remained confidential for up to three weeks following the conclusion of the previous month, and are almost always leaked on Fridays or Saturdays, when negative figures are less likely to be widely covered by the media.
Congresswoman Stephanie Bice’s (R-OK) proposed legislation would mandate that the agency disclose monthly border encounter figures within a period of seven days following the conclusion of each month.
In the event that the figures are not disclosed in a timely manner, the salary of the Office of the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security would be reduced by 25% in the subsequent month.
Mayorkas, whose current annual salary is $203,500, could conceivably experience a reduction in salary exceeding $50,000 should he fail to meet the deadline for a consecutive twelve months.
The delay in Mayorkas disclosing the figures was not unheard of in November. The August figures for the year 2023 were not disclosed until Friday, September 22nd.
The September figures were made public on Saturday, October 21st. Similarly, the December figures remained undisclosed until Friday, January 26th.
Each of the announcements depicted immigration levels that were close to shattering records and generated a deluge of negative news for the administration.
