Nikki Haley emerged victorious over Donald Trump in the Republican presidential primary in Washington, D.C. on Sunday evening.
With almost 63% of the vote, Haley secured her first win in the GOP primary race and gained 19 delegates. Reported by Decision Desk HQ, Haley garnered 1,274 votes while Trump received 676 votes.
Breaking Trump’s streak of victories, Haley finally secures a win against the former UN ambassador, bringing her some much-needed relief after a series of losses.
During the 2020 primary, Trump emerged victorious in the district without facing any opponents.
In contrast, in the 2016 primary, Trump finished third, trailing behind Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and former Ohio Gov. John Kasich.
Even after facing a defeat in her home state of South Carolina, Haley has committed to staying in the primary race until at least Super Tuesday next week.
Over a dozen states are set to vote for the Republican nominee.
Nevertheless, Trump continues to hold a significant lead in delegates over Haley and is expected to gain more support following Tuesday.
To secure the Republican nomination, candidates need to obtain at least 1,215 delegates.
