On Tuesday, billionaire tech executive and X owner Elon Musk expressed worries about a bill moving through Congress that aims to restrict U.S. access to social media apps like Chinese-owned TikTok unless they cut connections with foreign adversaries considered a national security risk.
Musk, a self-proclaimed advocate of free speech who supported the “Twitter Files,” replied to a post from Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) showcasing text from the legislation concerning websites and businesses serving social media platforms found to be breaking the proposed law.
The bill, known as the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act,” was introduced with bipartisan backing, bringing together GOP lawmakers like House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).
Following approval by the House Energy and Commerce Committee with unanimous support last week, the bill is set to be voted on by the full House as soon as this week.
If the bill progresses through both chambers of Congress, President Joe Biden has stated he will sign it into law.
Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI), who chairs the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, collaborated on the legislation with Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), the panel’s ranking member.
As of Wednesday morning, the bill managed to pass the U.S. House and will now continue on to be voted on in the Senate.
