An inquiry is now reportedly being demanded by a coalition of Republican senators into the nonprofit organizations that have provided support to the pro-Palestinian demonstrations that have erupted on college campuses nationwide.
The senators, led by Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), appealed to Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner Daniel Werfel in a letter for an investigation into multiple organizations that have provided support to the recent surge of pro-Palestinian demonstrations on collegiate campuses.
Ernst affixed his signature to the letter, which is also endorsed by Republican senators. Kevin Cramer (N.D.), Mike Crapo (Idaho), Dan Sullivan (Ark.), James Risch (Idaho), John Thune (S.D.), Lindsey Graham (S.C.), Ted Cruz (Texas), Marsha Blackburn (Tenn.), Mitt Romney (Utah), and Katie Britt (Alabama). Marco Rubio (Fla.), Thom Tillis (N.C.), Markwayne Mullin (Okla.), Roger Marshall (Kan.), and Katie Britt (Alabama).
Senators noted that an investigation had already been initiated into AJP Educational Foundation, a nonprofit organization.
In October, Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares initiated an inquiry into American Muslims for Palestine, an organization also recognized as American Muslims for Palestine, on the grounds that it might be in violation of the charitable solicitation laws of the state or for “providing support to terrorist organizations.”
According to the senators, pro-Palestine demonstrations against the ongoing conflict in Gaza have taken place on over 400 college campuses across the nation in recent weeks, causing support for the NSJP to “explode.”
Students are advocating for divestment from Israeli companies or those that supply Israel with weapons for its conflict with Hamas at their respective universities.
The group stated that they anticipate a response from the IRS by May 23.
