Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) reportedly announced on Friday that he intends to seek reelection in 2026, regardless of the outcome of his bid to become the Republican Senate leader later this year.
Cornyn, who is currently serving his fourth term, disclosed his intentions to The Dallas Morning News.
“Yes. … I mean, God willing. Inshallah.” the Senator reportedly told the paper.
Despite the prospective challenge from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R), Cornyn’s plans are set to proceed.
The two have become embroiled in a public dispute following Cornyn’s announcement of his intention to succeed Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) as the conference’s leader.
Cornyn responded by informing Paxton that it would be “difficult to flee from prison.”
The Texas Attorney General has been the subject of numerous investigations over the past decade, including allegations of securities fraud.
The incumbent senator expressed that he is not overly concerned about a challenge from Paxton.
In his most recent reelection campaign, Cornyn defeated Democrat M.J. Hegar by nearly 10 percentage points and received nearly 6 million ballots, the most ever received by a nonjudicial statewide candidate in the Lone Star State.
Cornyn has been a prominent ally of McConnell for a long time, having served as the second-ranking member of the Republican leadership from 2013 to 2019 before being term-limited.
