Former President Trump’s campaign has reportedly now essentially eliminated a big funding deficit compared to President Biden’s reelection campaign, thanks to a massive rise in donations over the last two months during and immediately following Trump’s New York City criminal trial.
According to statistics filed late Thursday by the Federal Election Commission (FEC), the Trump campaign and Republican National Committee (RNC) had a combined $171 million on hand, while the Biden campaign and Democratic National Committee (DNC) had a combined $157 million.
A more detailed assessment of the campaigns’ spending will not be available until next month, when joint fundraising committees submit their filings to the FEC.
The Biden team has also highlighted the use of campaign funding to construct infrastructure in battleground areas, while challenging Trump’s legal fees.
However, during the months of April and May, while the former president was primarily restricted to a Manhattan courtroom, Trump’s campaign handily outraised Biden’s, helping to erase a significant fundraising deficit.
In April, Trump’s campaign and the RNC raised $76 million, while the Biden campaign and the DNC raised $51 million.
The margin was even bigger in May, when the Trump campaign raised $141 million, more than the Biden team’s $85 million haul.
The Trump campaign says it received $53 million in online donations within 24 hours after a jury convicting the former president on all 34 felony counts of falsifying company records during his 2016 campaign to conceal alleged affairs.
In addition, federal papers show millionaire Timothy Mellon donated $50 million to a pro-Trump super PAC the day after Trump was found guilty.
Mellon had previously contributed millions to a super PAC backing Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
The massive cash infusion may allow Trump to invest in voter outreach in key battleground states.
The biggest super PAC backing his campaign has already indicated that it will spend $100 million on paid media until Labor Day, with a specific emphasis on four crucial battleground states.
