For the first time since 2005, the majority of Americans now reportedly favor reducing immigration to the country.
According to the survey, 55% of American adults want to see fewer immigrants enter the nation, while 41% want immigration to stay at current levels or even increase the number of people who can immigrate here.
This is the highest number of Americans who support reducing immigration since 58% supported reducing the number of noncitizens in 2001.
Of those surveyed, 25% indicated they wanted immigration to stay at its current level, while 16% said they wanted more people to immigrate to the United States.
The percentage represents a sharp decline from May 2020, when 34% of respondents believed that immigration ought to be raised.
Additionally, according to a Gallup poll, those who identify as Republicans, Democrats, or independents are more likely to favor reducing immigration than they were a year ago.
Republicans now make up an overwhelming 88% of those who stated they wanted immigration to decline in 2023, up from 73% in 2023.
From 2023 to 2024, the percentage of independents who support reducing immigration increased dramatically; it was 39% in 2023 and spiked to 50% in 2024.
Only 18% of Democrats thought that in 2023, immigration should be decreased. By 2024, 28% of Democrats support limiting immigration.
Over the past few years, Americans’ support for border security measures has increased dramatically.
In 2019, just 40% of Americans supported building more walls along the border between the United States and Mexico. By 2023, that number had increased to 53%.
In 2019, only 37% of Americans supported sending all undocumented immigrants back to their countries of origin. Gallup estimates that as of 2023, the percentage was 47%.
