Sinema and Manchin Both Blast Harris Over Her Plan to Get Rid of Filibuster

Senators Joe Manchin (I-W.Va.) and Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.) harshly criticized Vice President Harris on Tuesday for her intention to eliminate the legislative filibuster in order to enshrine Roe v. Wade.

Manchin, who is one of the most prominent advocates for the 60-vote threshold, informed CNN that he will not endorse Harris’s presidential campaign. He stated that it would be an enormous error to proceed with those plans if the Democrats maintain control of the upper chamber.

“Shame on her. She knows the filibuster is the Holy Grail of democracy. It’s the only thing that keeps us talking and working together. If she gets rid of that, then this would be the House on steroids.” Manchin said.

Sinema agreed with her Senate colleague, writing on X that:

“To state the supremely obvious, eliminating the filibuster to codify Roe v Wade also enables a future Congress to ban all abortion nationwide. What an absolutely terrible, shortsighted idea.”

Harris has been vocal about her advocacy for the elimination of the legislative filibuster for an extended period of time. In 2019, she declared her intention to eliminate it in order to facilitate the passage of the Green New Deal.

In 2022, she also stated that it should be repealed to formalize voting rights and abortion.

During an interview with Wisconsin Public Radio on Tuesday, she made the following remarks.

In response to the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, President Biden initiated a demand for a carve-out in the filibuster to restore Roe.

The effort was opposed by both Manchin and Sinema, who are both retiring from the upper chamber at the end of the year.
