Chris Cuomo, the presenter of NewsNation, reportedly criticized CBS for interrupting JD Vance’s microphone during the vice presidential debate, during which moderator Margaret Brennan administered a fact check.
During the debate between Vance and Tim Walz on Tuesday, which was moderated by Brennan and Norah O’Donnell, Vance’s previous comments regarding Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio were criticized.
Specifically, Vance was accused of disseminating a false claim that immigrants in the city were consuming family pets.
Vance did not explicitly address the pet-eating story; however, he identified illegal immigration as a problem that is detrimental to communities such as Springfield.
Although there were no explicit regulations prohibiting fact checks, CBS did specify that moderators would primarily “facilitate” and sparingly interrupt for fact checks prior to the debate.
Vance elaborated that the process of obtaining interim legal status has been significantly expanded and simplified, resulting in increased pressure on communities.
However, his microphone was interrupted during this explanation by the liberal moderators.
“Just to clarify for our viewers, Springfield, Ohio, does have a large number of Haitian migrants who have legal status, temporary protected status,” Brennan stated.
“Margaret, the rules were that you guys weren’t going to fact-check. And since you are fact-checking me, I think it’s important to say what’s actually going on,” Vance responded.
Cuomo criticized the fact check, asserting that Vance was correct and that the situation is more complex than CBS was portraying.
“When they were talking, at one point Vance wanted to correct something about how Haitians got into this country and he was right and the moderators wouldn’t let him correct it. It’s very interesting,” Cuomo said.
“Vance was right, okay? There’s nuance to it, but the bigger problem is why he was moved on? ‘We’ve got so much to get to.’ Says who? What is the schedule here? You have a list of topics? That’s not what this is about. It’s about how the American people can access these two men and the two theories and the narratives and you’ve got to let them have their speak.” he added.
